Defending champion Jannik Sinner receives favorable draw for U.S. Open

Defending champion Jannik Sinner, who has been recovering from illness, has been given a more favorable route to the U.S. Open final compared to Carlos Alcaraz, while Aryna Sabalenka faces a challenging path in her title defense following the draw made on Thursday.

Sinner, the top seed, has had his health under scrutiny since he withdrew from the Cincinnati final on Monday while trailing Alcaraz 5-0. He also withdrew from the mixed doubles event in New York that has since concluded.

Having increased his Grand Slam tally to four with victories at this year’s Australian Open and Wimbledon, Sinner will open his U.S. Open campaign against Czech player Vit Kopriva. He could potentially face fifth seed Jack Draper in the quarter-finals, third seed Alexander Zverev in the semi-finals, and Alcaraz in the final.

Reigning French Open champion Alcaraz, on the other hand, is positioned in a stacked bottom half of the draw. He will begin his tournament against American Reilly Opelka, with a possible quarter-final clash against Ben Shelton and a semi-final match against fourth seed Taylor Fritz.

Four-time champion Novak Djokovic, seeded seventh, will start his campaign against Learner Tien. He could face Frances Tiafoe in the fourth round and fourth-seeded Fritz in the quarter-finals, setting up a potential blockbuster semi-final against Alcaraz.

In the women’s draw, top seed Aryna Sabalenka will begin her title defense against Rebeka Masarova. Her path could lead to a quarter-final matchup with Cincinnati finalist Jasmine Paolini and a semi-final clash with Jessica Pegula.

Wimbledon champion Iga Swiatek, who recently won her tune-up event in Cincinnati, may face Amanda Anisimova in the quarter-finals. Meanwhile, French Open champion Coco Gauff, the third seed, could encounter sixth seed and fellow American Madison Keys, who won this year’s Australian Open, in the quarter-finals, with a potential meeting against Swiatek in the semi-finals.
