Death toll rises to 58 in Basilan ferry sinking

The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) recovered another body on Monday during underwater operations linked to the sinking of MV Trisha Kerstin 3 in waters off Basilan, authorities reported.

With the latest recovery, officials said the number of fatalities increased to 58. A total of 293 passengers were confirmed to have survived the incident, while 21 individuals remained unaccounted for as search operations continued.

The Coast Guard said the casualty figures were verified through joint validation involving the Philippine National Police Scene of the Crime Operatives, local disaster response offices, and the families of the victims.

Authorities noted that coordination among national and local agencies was conducted daily to ensure accuracy and transparency in reporting the number of casualties.

Search and retrieval operations were sustained in the area, with technical divers continuing underwater assessments despite challenging conditions.

Officials reiterated their commitment to continue operations until all missing passengers were located and properly accounted for.

Families of victims and survivors were advised to remain in close contact with authorities for official updates and assistance related to the incident.

The sinking of MV Trisha Kerstin 3 has drawn nationwide attention and renewed calls for stricter enforcement of maritime safety rules to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
