The number of fatalities from the Binaliw sanitary landfill landslide in Cebu has reached 23, with 13 individuals still reported missing, the Cebu City Police Office (CCPO) said Thursday morning.
At least 18 others sustained injuries and are currently receiving medical care as search and rescue operations continue at the site.
Military and emergency personnel, including the Philippine Army, Navy, police, and local disaster offices, are assisting with excavation and victim recovery efforts.
The Philippine Air Force (PAF) has been supporting the ground response since January 9, deploying personnel from the 505th Search and Rescue Group to assist the Bureau of Fire Protection, which is leading on-site operations.
PAF Public Affairs Chief Ma. Christina Basco said teams rotate daily to maintain continuous support while ensuring the safety and rest of rescuers.
The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) has issued a cease-and-desist order against the landfill operator, Prime Integrated Waste Solutions Inc., and vowed to hold responsible parties accountable after a full investigation.
Cebu City declared a state of calamity, allowing the release of emergency funds, rapid procurement, and implementation of relief, rehabilitation, and recovery measures for affected families.
