The Commission on Elections (Comelec) on Wednesday expressed support for the passage of an anti-political dynasty law.
In a message, Comelec Chairperson George Garcia said, “We will support any initiative that will put an end to political dynasty.”
“The Constitution must at all times reign supreme,” he added.
Garcia said public office should be available to anyone who would like to serve.
“The importance is unparalleled. Equal opportunity for public service must be guaranteed,” he said.
The statement was issued amid the directive of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. to Congress to prioritize some anti-corruption measures, including a bill banning political dynasties, among others.
On the other hand, Bishop Pablo Cardinal David welcomed the action of the President.
“Just when people were getting the impression that Malacañang was preparing to dissolve the ICI (Independent Commission for Infrastructure) already and just leave the rest of the work to the Ombudsman, a surprise decision came from Malacañang to prioritize key reform measures,” he said in a social media post.
“This is an unexpected blink—but a most welcome direction nevertheless.” (PNA)
