China called on the United States to remove obstacles to high-level exchanges as preparations continued for President Xi Jinping’s planned visit to Washington next month.
Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi made the appeal during a meeting with US Ambassador to China David Perdue in Beijing on Wednesday, according to state-run Xinhua news agency.
Wang said both governments should carry out the agreements reached by Xi and US President Donald Trump and work through issues affecting high-level engagement between the two countries.
Perdue separately described the meeting as productive and said discussions covered preparations for Xi’s reciprocal visit to Washington.
The US ambassador said both sides were working toward what he called a constructive relationship based on strategic stability, fairness and reciprocity.
Xi is expected to travel to the United States next month, when world leaders will gather in New York for the United Nations General Assembly.
The planned trip follows Trump’s state visit to China in May and comes as Beijing and Washington continue efforts to manage differences while maintaining direct communication between their leaders.
The latest talks underscored efforts by both sides to preserve high-level diplomatic engagement despite persistent tensions in the broader US-China relationship.
