Cebu City ignites Sinulog 2026 with ‘Sinulog sa Dakbayan’

The “Queen City of the South” erupted in a vibrant display of faith and culture on Sunday as the local government officially launched the Sinulog 2026 festivities.

This year’s celebration, held in honor of the feast of the Santo Niño (Child Jesus), began with the high-energy “Sinulog sa Dakbayan,” showcasing the city’s premier local talent.

The kick-off event featured 17 dancing contingents representing various barangays across Cebu City.

In a fierce display of choreography and devotion, Lumad Basakanon of Barangay Basak Pardo claimed victory in the street dancing competition, while Lambo Mabolo of Barangay Mabolo took home the top prize for the grand ritual showdown.

Cebu City Mayor Nestor Archival expressed satisfaction with the opening ceremonies, noting that the events proceeded without a hitch.

“Everything is going smoothly,” Archival said, emphasizing the city’s readiness to host the massive influx of visitors.

The winners from Sunday’s local competition will advance to the highly anticipated Sinulog Mardi Gras next Sunday, January 18. They will be joined by over 40 other contingents from across the province and the country for the festival’s grand finale.

City officials are bracing for a massive turnout this year, with Mayor Archival projecting between four to five million spectators.

The crowd estimate includes a significant surge of both domestic and international tourists drawn to the festival’s unique blend of religious solemnity and rhythmic pageantry.

A full week of cultural and religious activities is scheduled leading up to the Grand Parade, promising a festive atmosphere as Cebu continues its centuries-old tradition of devotion to the Santo Niño
