The social advocacy arm of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) has expressed its support for clemency for Mary Jane Veloso, who is anticipated to return to the Philippines from Indonesia, where she was convicted of drug trafficking in 2010.
“Solidarity is once again emerging as we pray for President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. to grant clemency to Mary Jane upon her arrival. We feel compelled to stand with her in solidarity, joining in prayer for her immediate and complete clemency on humanitarian grounds, as she is a victim of human trafficking,” Caritas Philippines stated in a formal announcement on Tuesday.
The organization highlighted that such clemency would also benefit Veloso’s family.
“Their family has endured significant hardship throughout this tumultuous journey. Mary Jane’s experience as a victim of human trafficking has had a profound impact on them all,” Caritas Philippines remarked.
“We remain hopeful for the granting of her freedom, as an act of compassion would render the world a less cold and more just place this Christmas.”
Concurrently, the CBCP conducted a Mass attended by Veloso’s parents in its chapel located in Intramuros, Manila, on Monday evening, officiated by Caritas Philippines Vice Chair Bishop Gerardo Alminaza.
“We stand in solidarity with Mary Jane’s parents, expressing gratitude for her imminent return home… and we fervently pray for the grant of her clemency,” he conveyed in an article published on the CBCP News website.
Advocates for migrants, along with representatives from Caritas Philippines and the bishops’ Episcopal Commission for the Pastoral Care of Migrants and Itinerant People (ECMI), were also present at the Mass.
While no specific date for Veloso’s return has been announced, reports indicate that she may return to her home country within this month.
