Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney spoke with United Kingdom Prime Minister Keir Starmer on Monday to discuss economic and security partnerships.
Carney thanked Starmer for his condolences following a deadly school shooting last week in Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia.
The leaders highlighted growing collaboration between the two countries, including trade, digital commerce, critical minerals, and sovereign AI infrastructure, under the Canada-UK Economic and Trade Working Group.
They also addressed ongoing talks between the European Union and the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP) bloc.
Carney emphasized the potential of the Defense, Security and Resilience Bank (DSR Bank) to mobilize private capital for defense and security firms, creating opportunities for workers and businesses across both nations. The prime ministers agreed to have their teams coordinate closely to advance the initiative and align Canadian and UK efforts.
Carney and Starmer pledged to maintain close communication as Canada seeks to strengthen global ties amid strained relations with the United States.
Relations between Canada and the US have faced tensions after former President Donald Trump imposed tariffs on Canadian goods and paused trade negotiations following an anti-tariff advertisement aired in the US.
