Philippine businesses closed 2025 on a stronger note, buoyed by robust holiday spending and improving operational conditions, even as they adopt a more measured outlook for early 2026 and the year ahead.
Results of the latest Business Expectations Survey conducted by the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas show that the overall business confidence index climbed to 29.7 percent in the fourth quarter of 2025, up from 23.2 percent in the previous quarter. A positive confidence index indicates that more firms remain optimistic than pessimistic, underscoring the resilience of the domestic business environment toward the end of the year.
Firms attributed the improved sentiment largely to the expected surge in consumer spending during the holiday season, a traditional driver of economic activity. Businesses also pointed to gains in productivity and operational efficiency, the rollout of new products and services, and a favorable inflation environment as key factors supporting confidence in the current quarter. These conditions allowed many companies to capitalize on stronger demand while managing costs more effectively.
Looking ahead, business sentiment remains positive for both the first quarter of 2026 and the next 12 months, though at a more tempered pace. The confidence index for the next quarter eased to 23.7 percent, while the year-ahead outlook settled at 40.4 percent. While these figures are lower than in the previous survey, they still reflect continued optimism about near-term economic prospects, signaling that businesses expect growth momentum to carry forward despite emerging challenges.
Some firms cited the lingering effects of recent natural calamities and concerns over corruption-related issues as factors that may weigh on sentiment in the coming months. Even so, the overall outlook suggests that businesses are factoring in these risks while maintaining confidence in the broader economic trajectory.
Encouragingly, for the fifth consecutive quarter, firms expect inflation over the next 12 months to remain within the National Government’s target range. Well-anchored inflation expectations provide a stable environment for investment decisions, expansion plans, and job creation, reinforcing the foundations for sustainable growth.
As a key economic surveillance tool of the central bank, the Business Expectations Survey continues to offer valuable insights into corporate sentiment and economic conditions. The latest results highlight a business sector that remains adaptive and forward-looking, entering 2026 with cautious confidence and a firm belief in the economy’s capacity to navigate uncertainties while sustaining growth.
