The Burauen municipal government opened Eastern Visayas’ first wastewater treatment facility built for a public market as part of efforts to improve sanitation and protect local water sources.
The Php 17 million facility serves the Burauen Commercial Complex, the town’s busiest trading area.
It was designed to collect, process and safely discharge wastewater generated by market operations.
The local government said the system could treat an estimated 23.4 million liters of wastewater each year.
Mayor Fe Sudario-Renomeron led the recent inauguration of the project, which was intended to reduce pollution and improve public health conditions.
Officials said treating wastewater before release would help protect nearby waterways and support more responsible environmental management.
The treated water may also be reused for activities such as cleaning and watering plants.
Burauen is a first-class municipality in Leyte with more than 54,000 residents and is located about 42 kilometers south of Tacloban City.
