BuCor seeks PNP, NBI assistance in probing fatal stabbing at Bilibid prison

The Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) has called on the Philippine National Police (PNP) and the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) to conduct a thorough probe into a fatal stabbing incident at the New Bilibid Prison (NBP) in Muntinlupa City on Thursday morning.

BuCor Officer-in-Charge Assistant Secretary Al Perreras sent formal letters to NBI Director Jaime Santiago and PNP Chief Gen. Rommel Marbil, emphasizing the need to “further establish the facts, promote transparency, and determine accountability” in the incident.

The stabbing resulted in the death of inmate Ricardo Peralta and left two others, identified as Reginal Lacuerta and Bert Cupada, injured.

Initial reports indicate that four persons deprived of liberty (PDLs) are being investigated for their possible involvement in the attack. Perreras has directed Acting NBP Superintendent C/Supt. Roger Boncales will submit a detailed incident report and fully cooperate with the NBI and PNP investigations.

The body of Ricardo Peralta was claimed on Thursday evening by his common-law wife, Lalune Gabriel. Meanwhile, the injured inmates, Lacuerta and Cupada, were transported to Ospital ng Muntinlupa for medical treatment.

BuCor has reiterated its commitment to ensuring transparency and accountability in addressing the incident while working with law enforcement agencies to maintain security and order within the facility.

This stabbing highlights ongoing challenges in maintaining safety and discipline within the country’s largest correctional facility, where overcrowding and resource constraints persist.
