Manila is about to welcome back one of its most beloved volleyball stars.
Leila Barros, the Brazilian volleyball icon who charmed Filipino fans at the turn of the millennium, is returning to the Philippines as a special guest for the Finals of the FIVB Men’s World Championship 2025. The international showdown is set for September 27 to 28 at the SM Mall of Asia Arena.
For many Filipino fans, Barros’ name is synonymous with the golden age of volleyball’s popularity in the country. Her dazzling play and magnetic charisma during the 2000 FIVB Grand Prix in Manila left a lasting impression, sparking a following that transcended the sport. Now, a quarter of a century later, her return feels like a long-awaited reunion.
The Philippine National Volleyball Federation (PNVF), led by President Ramon “Tats” Suzara, in partnership with the Asian Volleyball Confederation, made the special arrangement to bring Barros back for the momentous occasion.
“Having Leila here isn’t just about nostalgia—it’s about honoring the history of the sport and celebrating how far volleyball has come in the Philippines,” said Suzara.
Barros, who helped Brazil capture Olympic bronze medals in Atlanta 1996 and Sydney 2000, remains one of the most recognizable faces in international volleyball. Her presence at the Finals is expected to add a layer of excitement and sentimentality to what is already being billed as the country’s biggest volleyball event ever.
For Filipino fans who once cheered her name, her return is more than just a guest appearance—it’s a chance to relive an unforgettable chapter of volleyball history while witnessing the sport’s next generation of stars take center stage.
