MANILA – A Bank of the Philippine Islands (BPI) official on Wednesday confirmed that a joint time deposit account under former President Rodrigo Duterte and Vice President Sara Duterte carried a principal amount of P40.6 million when it was opened in 2010.
Private prosecutor James Bryan Ibrahim Alih raised the account during Day 35 of Vice President Duterte’s impeachment trial, identifying it as a joint time deposit maintained at BPI’s Julia Vargas branch.
BPI division head Marvin Galvez testified that the account was opened on January 22, 2010.
Galvez also confirmed that the P40.6-million principal amount was renewed 12 times.
“You mentioned that the principal amount is renewed 12 times. It is renewed 12 times; if it’s not renewed, where will the proceeds go?” Alih asked.
Galvez replied that the proceeds would go to the settlement account, where the proceeds and maturities are debited.
The testimony formed part of the prosecution’s presentation of bank records as the Senate impeachment court continued examining financial accounts and transactions linked to Vice President Duterte and members of her family.
