Sensing a crucial opening in the standings, the Meralco Bolts turned up the intensity and delivered a statement win, dismantling Barangay Ginebra with a commanding 112-91 victory in the Philippine Basketball Association Commissioner’s Cup on Friday at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
What began as a tight Labor Day showdown quickly tilted in Meralco’s favor after a blistering 29-13 second-quarter explosion, breaking the game wide open and leaving the Gin Kings scrambling for answers the rest of the night.
The Bolts leaned on balanced scoring and suffocating defense, keeping Ginebra at bay while seizing control of the tempo. The emphatic win pushed Meralco to a 6-3 record, vaulting them to fourth place and significantly boosting their bid for a coveted twice-to-beat advantage in the quarterfinals.
For Ginebra, the loss snapped a five-game winning streak as they slipped to 7-3, now trailing league leaders NLEX and Rain or Shine at 8-2.
“This was big. They were on a winning streak and already solid in the Top 4. This gives us a stronger chance to get there as well,” said Meralco coach Luigi Trillo, emphasizing the importance of the breakthrough win.
Chris Newsome echoed the sentiment after earning Player of the Game honors. “Top 4 is crucial if you’re aiming for a championship. You want every advantage you can get,” he said.
Meralco’s depth was on full display. Import Marvin Jones tallied 18 points and nine rebounds, matched by CJ Cansino, while Newsome chipped in 12 points along with three assists and three steals. Cliff Hodge and Bong Quinto added 11 apiece, with Jason Brickman and Chris Banchero contributing 10 each in a well-rounded offensive effort.
On the other side, RJ Abarrientos and Justin Brownlee carried the scoring load for Ginebra with 24 points apiece, but lacked support as no other teammate reached double figures.
With momentum back on their side after back-to-back losses, the Bolts now look to close out the eliminations strong against Blackwater, Terrafirma, and Magnolia—fully aware that a Top Four finish could spell the difference between a deep playoff run and an early exit.
