The Bureau of Internal Revenue has filed a Php 2.228-billion tax evasion complaint against Hongsheng Gaming Technology Inc. over alleged tax deficiencies tied to its offshore gaming operations in the Philippines.

The case, filed with the Department of Justice on August 6, covered taxable years 2021 to 2023 and stemmed from discrepancies found in the company’s reported revenues and government records.

According to the BIR, Hongsheng allegedly underdeclared income and failed to report the correct value-added tax liabilities for several taxable quarters.

The company was also accused of failing to withhold and remit final withholding taxes for foreign employees.

The bureau said the combined deficiency income tax, VAT and final withholding tax liabilities reached Php 2,227,759,311.21.

BIR Commissioner Charlito Martin Mendoza said the agency would continue pursuing cases involving businesses suspected of avoiding taxes while operating and earning in the country.

“Honest taxpayers deserve a level playing field. No business should be able to operate in the Philippines, earn income here, and evade the taxes required by law. The BIR will pursue these cases wherever the evidence leads us,” Mendoza said.

The complaint forms part of the BIR’s Run After Tax Evaders program. The allegations against Hongsheng will still undergo evaluation and appropriate proceedings before the DOJ.
