Bill seeking 6-year term for barangay and SK officials pass House 2nd reading

The House of Representatives passed the second reading of a bill that extends the term of Barangay and Sangguinang Kabataan Officials to 6 years from three years.

House Bill 11287, approved via viva voce in the plenary session, aims to extend the term of officials and will take effect on January 30, 2029, after the officials are elected on the second Monday of 2029.

However, according to the measure authored principally by House Speaker Martin Romualdez, no barangay official shall serve in the same position for more than two consecutive terms, while SK officials shall serve no more than one term.

The bill also includes a temporary provision allowing all current Barangay and SK officials elected on October 30, 2023, to stay in office until the next election in May 2029 unless they are removed or suspended for valid reasons before then.

On January 14, the Senate passed Senate Bill 2816 on its third and final reading. The bill establishes a four-year term for elected barangay officials and SK members, with a maximum of three consecutive terms in the same position for barangay officials.

It also specifies that the next regular barangay and SK elections will occur on the first Monday of October 2027 and every four years after that.
