The provincial government of Biliran has intensified its Bamboo Rehabilitation Program to reduce flooding risks and create livelihood opportunities.
Governor Rogelio Espina led the planting of 100 Bayog bamboo seedlings along riverbanks in Barangay Agpangi and Barangay Sabang in Naval.
The Bayog variety was chosen for its role in stabilizing riverbanks, preventing erosion, and supporting construction, furniture-making, and even as a food source.
“The newly planted seedlings are expected to stabilize riverbanks, prevent soil erosion, and reduce scouring around bridges and other critical infrastructure,” the provincial government said.
Bamboo also acts as a carbon sink, slows water flow during heavy rains, and helps lower flood risks in surrounding communities.
Espina highlighted that the seedlings will become “guardians of our riverbanks and foundations of our green economy.”
The program encourages local residents to participate in environmental stewardship and take an active role in protecting natural resources.
Biliran plans to expand bamboo planting across all major river systems in the province.
Aside from the initial 100 seedlings, 3,000 more are being propagated for future transplantation.
The initiative aligns with the provincial government’s broader goal of enhancing climate resilience and sustainable livelihoods for communities.
