As they celebrate their fourth year in the entertainment industry, Filipino boy group BGYO is embracing a more mature sound and artistic direction.
During the Star Magic Spotlight Press Conference, members Gelo, Akira, JL, Mikki, and Nate shared their openness to evolving musically as they grow as artists.
“We’re ready for anything po. And we’re getting older din po. So I think we should kind of match our feeling sa music so that it’s really us, BGYO,” Nate shared.
Mikki echoed this, adding, “Siyempre, nag-mature na din po talaga when it comes to our music, how we represent ourselves.”
Gelo noted that their experiences have shaped their perspective on their careers. “Siguro mas marami na rin kasi tayong na-eexperience once na tumatanda tayo. Kaya mas marami rin kami pwedeng input and connect din sa music namin, sa mga future songs,” he said.
Reflecting on their journey, JL recalled how they were once seen as newcomers in the industry. “Dati kasi, every time na may nakakasalubong kaming tao, ay, ang babata nyo po pala! Tapos ngayon, parang kami na ‘yung mas matatanda so nakakapanibago. Pero yan, gano’n talaga ang buhay,” he shared.
On March 13, BGYO released their self-titled album, featuring five tracks, including “Trash” and “Divine.” The group worked with various songwriters, producers, and international creatives during a music camp to develop their new sound.
“We were trying to experiment kung anong sound would really work and we felt very confident sa new sound namin this EP,” Mikki said.
“Iba-ibang genre po siya pero when you hear it, you can hear that distinct BGYO sound. So usually, when we release something po, mayroon kaming mga meetings. We have listening sessions and mga batuhan lang ng ideas kasama po din ‘yung label namin, ‘yung BGYO management, and of course, us,” he added.
Akira emphasized their decision to embrace a more mature style while maintaining their wholesome image. “Regarding doon sa leaning towards maturity ng BGYO, I think nag-agree kami lahat, even the management na parang it’s time nga kasi nga, we’re getting older na nga rin. So, it’s time to be more mature pero wholesome pa rin talaga,” he explained.
Beyond their music, the group reflected on overcoming challenges in their journey.
“Tao naman po kami lahat. So, may mga times po talaga na we feel that way,” Mikki admitted. “Yung feeling na (it) will teach us a lot on how to improve ourselves, o paano namin iha-handle ‘yung gano’ng situation.”
Nate shared how they support each other through difficulties. “Ang pinakasolution siguro namin every time nakakaramdam kami ng mga negativity is kailangan lang talaga intact kami as a group. Kailangan nandyan kami para sa isa’t isa, kasi kapag mag-isa ka lang na dinadamdam mo ‘yan, ‘pag sino-solo mo, matatalo ka talaga.”
Akira agreed, adding, “Good thing din po kasi through experience po dun sa four years na naging BGYO kami, nagkaroon kami ng mga ideas on how to improve nga. So, nagkaroon kami ng mga batuhan ng ideas on how to improve our socmeds or how to promote our songs.”
As they continue to grow, BGYO remains committed to evolving their music while staying true to their identity.
