The Batang PBA blueprint is gearing up for its biggest leap yet — an international rollout that will bring the iconic youth tournament to courts around the world.
Talks are already underway for multiple overseas editions, with Bahrain leading the charge as the first country poised to launch its own Batang PBA as early as January next year. The global expansion mirrors the Philippines’ grassroots basketball push, this time carrying the names and colors of all 12 PBA ballclubs.
Following the established format, participating teams abroad will don PBA franchise identities and compete across the 10-and-under, 15-and-under, and 19-and-under divisions. Commissioner Willie Marcial said the Bahrain leg is close to being finalized, with a signing expected during the league’s Philippine Cup doubleheader in the kingdom this December featuring Barangay Ginebra, Rain or Shine, and Magnolia.
Ginebra deputy coach Richard del Rosario is set to spearhead the Bahrain edition.
“Pagpunta namin sa Bahrain, baka magka-pirmahan na kami. By January, yun ang target date na magsimula,” Marcial shared.
Among the pending decisions is whether teams will be composed entirely of Filipino youth players or a mix of local and foreign talents. Age verification will be strictly enforced. “Ang ini-emphasize ko doon, yung maging mahigpit sa age issue. Kailangan talagang sasalain ang mga players,” Marcial noted.
The Bahrain launch may just be the beginning. TNT deputy coach and former PBA guard Ryan Reyes has expressed interest in hosting a Batang PBA tournament in Australia, while Filipino communities in Alberta, Canada, have made similar proposals. A youth team from Alberta likewise plans to join Batang PBA 2026 in Manila.
“Yung sa Australia, mag-uusap pa lang kami ni Ryan. Na-bring up niya lang sa akin,” Marcial added.
Dubai has also emerged as another potential host city after the PBA held a successful game there last month between Ginebra and San Miguel Beer at the Coca-Cola Arena.
The timing couldn’t be more fitting. As the PBA marks its 50th anniversary this season, the league’s grassroots program is extending its reach beyond Philippine shores, nurturing young hoop dreams and bringing the Batang PBA experience to Filipino communities — and future stars — worldwide.
