Barangay tanod killed in Tondo shooting by cellmate

A barangay tanod in Tondo, Manila, was shot dead at close range by his former cellmate.

The incident, captured on CCTV, occurred in Barangay 38. The footage shows a group of men drinking when one suddenly pulls out a gun, fires several warning shots, and then targets the victim.

According to a barangay official, the victim was found dead at the scene.

Before the shooting, a man in a green jersey left the group multiple times to call the victim, who was making rice cakes (biko) to sell, to join them. The victim’s brother said the gunman had visited three times and, on the third, threatened that the victim’s family would be hurt if he didn’t comply.

CCTV showed the victim saluting the gunman and sitting near him shortly before being shot.

The gunman and four companions fled on a motorcycle. Relatives said the two were former cellmates.

After the shooting, the gunman reportedly called an acquaintance and claimed the victim had disrespected his mother, which led to the crime.

Authorities are investigating the incident and searching for the gunman, who is also wanted in connection with other shootings. They are also looking for the other men involved, who could face charges.
