Barangay Socorro in Cubao, Quezon City conducted a large-scale disaster relief and rescue simulation on Friday, October 17, aimed at testing the community’s readiness and operational efficiency in times of emergencies, particularly in the event of an earthquake.
Led by Barangay Chairman Teedulo Santos, M.D., the drill mobilized all of the barangay’s emergency units—including fire, medical, health, and security officers, as well as the social welfare team—to evaluate their coordination, speed, and situational awareness during crisis situations. The simulation served as both a training exercise and a diagnostic assessment of Socorro’s disaster response capabilities.
A temporary command post was set up in front of the Barangay Hall along 15th Street, serving as the central hub for communications, deployment, and coordination. Barangay security officers, supported by health and medical teams with ambulances, scoured the entire barangay to locate and rescue residents supposedly trapped in collapsed structures. Fire rescue units joined the operation, simulating fire suppression and clearing pathways for rescuers.
Once victims were retrieved, medical teams provided on-site first aid and emergency care, while social welfare officers distributed relief packs and hot meals to residents affected by the simulated disaster. The entire operation unfolded in a highly organized manner, showcasing all components of an efficient and responsive relief and rescue effort.
Chairman Santos emphasized that the exercise was conducted in line with the directive of Quezon City Mayor Joy Belmonte to strengthen barangay-level preparedness amid the country’s growing vulnerability to natural disasters.
“This drill is part of our continuing compliance with the directive of Mayor Joy Belmonte for all barangays to enhance their disaster risk reduction programs,” Santos said. “With the recent earthquakes in Cebu and Davao, and the typhoons that have affected different parts of the country, we cannot afford to be complacent. Preparedness saves lives.”
He added that the simulation was not merely procedural but intended to instill discipline, quick response, and teamwork among barangay personnel and volunteers. “Our goal is to ensure that every unit—fire, medical, security, and social welfare—knows its role and can act swiftly and efficiently when real emergencies happen,” Santos said.
The activity concluded with a post-drill assessment, where key responders reviewed their performance and identified areas for improvement. Barangay Socorro plans to hold similar simulations regularly to maintain its readiness and uphold public safety.
