Ayala Malls strengthens sustainability efforts beyond Earth Hour

As the country joins the global Earth Hour observance, Ayala Malls reaffirms its long-term commitment to environmental sustainability through innovative cooling systems and waste reduction programs that go far beyond an hour of symbolic lights-off.

To help ease the effects of summer heat, Ayala Malls utilizes advanced chilled water systems that absorb excess heat and regulate indoor temperatures, creating a cool and comfortable environment for shoppers.

Instead of relying solely on fresh municipal water, Ayala Malls uses treated wastewater from mall sinks, restrooms, toilets and kitchen facilities through its onsite sewage treatment plants. This recycled water powers cooling towers, reducing pollution, conserving fresh water and ensuring operational efficiency—especially during water shortages.

This sustainable system also supports compliance with Green Building Standards, including LEED certification, and contributes to lower utility and maintenance costs by minimizing corrosion and scaling.

Recycling initiatives promote circular economy
Ayala Malls has also partnered with ChopValue Philippines to repurpose used chopsticks from mall food courts into furniture and home items such as side tables, trays and drink coasters. Since July 2024, the program has recycled more than 4.7 million chopsticks, equivalent to more than 230,000 kilograms of carbon dioxide emissions saved.

Additionally, a partnership with Green Trident supports circular waste management by recycling clean, dry plastics into alternative construction and paper products such as Poly AL pro boards and Papel ni Juan. In 2024, over 32,000 pieces of clean plastic were collected across 18 Ayala Malls nationwide. In the first two months of 2025 alone, the initiative has already gathered more than 15,000 plastic items.

“At Ayala Malls, we believe that sustainability is not just a responsibility but an opportunity,” said Paul Birkett, chief operating officer of Ayala Malls. “Our advanced chilled water systems and recycling partnerships help make our malls more environmentally friendly, resilient and resource-efficient.”

These initiatives support Ayala Land’s broader goals of reaching carbon neutrality by 2030 and net-zero emissions by 2050.

As the lights dim during Earth Hour, Ayala Malls encourages the public to adopt sustainable practices that contribute to a healthier planet.
