Argentina escapes Cape Verde scare as Messi leads defending champions into Last 16

MIAMI GARDENS, Florida — Defending champion Argentina needed every ounce of its championship grit to survive an inspired challenge from tournament debutant Cape Verde, escaping with a pulsating 3-2 extra-time victory to book its place in the FIFA World Cup Round of 16.

Lionel Messi once again delivered on the biggest stage, but it was far from a routine night for La Albiceleste as the tiny African nation refused to back down, twice clawing its way level before an unfortunate own goal finally separated the sides.

Argentina now advances to face Egypt in the next round after surviving one of the most dramatic knockout matches of the tournament.

Messi opened the scoring in the 29th minute with a trademark finish, timing his run perfectly before smashing the ball into the roof of the net for his seventh goal of the competition. The strike also marked his record-extending 20th World Cup goal and continued his remarkable scoring streak on football’s grandest stage.

Cape Verde, however, proved it was no ordinary underdog.

The Blue Sharks stunned the heavily pro-Argentina crowd by repeatedly finding answers against the reigning world champions. Sidny Lopes Cabral erased Argentina’s early advantage before Lisandro Martinez appeared to have won the contest with a goal early in stoppage time of regulation.

But Cape Verde refused to surrender.

Deroy Duarte and his teammates continued to press, and Cabral struck again in extra time with a curling finish beyond Emiliano Martinez to make it 2-2 in the 103rd minute, pushing Argentina to the edge of a historic upset.

With penalties looming, Argentina finally caught the decisive break.

Cristian Romero rose highest for a header in the 111th minute, but the ball deflected off defender Diney Borges and into the net for an own goal that restored Argentina’s lead for good.

The defending champions held firm through the closing minutes to secure passage into the knockout stage’s next round.

Messi praised his team’s resilience after another nerve-racking World Cup test.

“This team has shown it many times—we compete until the very end,” the Argentina captain said. “That’s exactly what we did tonight.”

Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni also acknowledged the enormous challenge posed by Cape Verde.

“They showed everyone that there are no easy matches at this level,” Scaloni said. “They played with tremendous quality and deserved a lot of credit.”

Although eliminated, Cape Verde left the tournament with its reputation soaring.

Playing in its first-ever World Cup, the island nation of just over half a million people became one of the competition’s biggest surprises after reaching the knockout rounds through gritty performances against former champions Spain and Uruguay, as well as Saudi Arabia.

Head coach Bubista expressed pride despite the heartbreaking exit.

“We represented our country with dignity,” he said. “We pushed the world champions to extra time and showed the identity of Cape Verde. Our players gave everything.”

Defender Pico Lopes echoed that sentiment after the emotional defeat.

“We came so close,” Lopes said. “We fought back twice against the defending champions. It hurts because we believed, but we also showed the character and quality of this team.”

As the final whistle sounded, Cape Verde’s players remained on the field, embracing one another while soaking in applause from their supporters after a historic World Cup journey that captured the imagination of football fans around the world.
