CALANASAN, Apayao – The local government unit (LGU) of this town has temporarily prohibited the entry of live swine, pork meat and pork-based products to protect its local hog industry from the threat of African swine fever (ASF).

The temporary ban immediately took effect following the issuance of Executive Order No. 50 signed by Mayor Shamir Bulut on Wednesday.

The order aims to prevent the possible introduction and spread of the highly contagious animal disease, after a confirmed case of ASF was recorded in Luna town where a number of traders from Calanasan get their supply.

“The Office of Agricultural Services, through the Livestock Division, recommended a local-wide temporary ban on the importation of live swine, pork meat, and pork-based products from outside the municipality to ensure the health and safety of the people and all locally-raised swine,” Bulut said in a statement.

ASF is a highly contagious viral disease that affects domestic and wild pigs. Although it poses no direct threat to human health, it can cause severe illness and death among infected pigs, resulting in substantial economic losses for the swine industry.

By restricting the entry of live pigs and pork products through the establishment of checkpoint in entry and exit points, Calanasan seeks to strengthen its biosecurity measures and reduce the risk of ASF entering the municipality.

Residents, traders, transport operators and other stakeholders are urged to comply with the temporary restrictions and follow the advisories issued by local authorities.

Hog raisers are also encouraged to maintain strict farm biosecurity, disinfect equipment and facilities, and immediately report animals showing signs of illness to the appropriate veterinary authorities. (PNA)
