In early February 2025, Angkas, a prominent motorcycle ride-hailing company in the Philippines, faced significant public backlash following a motorcade incident that disrupted traffic in Cainta, Rizal.

The event led to legal repercussions for the company’s CEO, George Royeca, and raised questions about his political aspirations.

Traffic disruption and legal actions
On February 2, a convoy of Angkas riders organized by Royeca obstructed the Cainta Junction intersection, causing a traffic standstill for over two minutes.

The riders also ignored traffic signs, compounding the disruption. The Land Transportation Office (LTO) suspended Royeca’s driver’s license for 90 days, pending further investigation.

LTO chief Vigor Mendoza II emphasized the severity of the violation, noting that such actions undermine public trust and safety.

Cainta Mayor Elenita Nieto also imposed sanctions on Angkas, mandating the company to perform community service as a form of restitution. Mayor Nieto highlighted the importance of accountability and expressed hope that the incident would serve as a lesson to the riding community.

Public apology and acceptance of responsibility
In the wake of the incident, Royeca issued a public apology, acknowledging the lapse in discipline and safety protocols.

He stated, “I take full responsibility. There are no excuses for our actions. I humbly ask for the public’s sincere forgiveness, as well as that of our passengers, fellow motorists, and authorities.”

Royeca further committed to cooperating with authorities and ensuring such incidents do not recur.

Political implications
The controversy emerged at a critical time for Royeca, who had filed his candidacy as the first nominee for the Angkasangga Party-list in the upcoming midterm elections.

The party list aims to advocate for the rights and welfare of informal workers, including motorcycle riders. This incident has cast a shadow over his campaign, with discussions arising about its potential impact on his political credibility and the party’s platform.

Community service commitment
Angkas has pledged to undertake community service initiatives in Cainta as part of the sanctions. Mayor Nieto emphasized the need for the company to follow through on this commitment, stating, “We will ensure they fulfill their promise to serve the community.”

This move is seen as an opportunity for Angkas to rebuild public trust and demonstrate genuine remorse through positive community engagement.

Conclusion
The motorcade incident involving Angkas highlighted the importance of adhering to traffic regulations and maintaining public safety. It reminds us that corporate actions, especially those affecting public welfare, carry significant consequences.

As Angkas embarks on its community service obligations, the company’s future, along with Royeca’s political ambitions, will be closely observed by both the public and stakeholders.
