A whistleblower at the center of the country’s most disturbing unresolved case of disappearances has taken legal action against police officers allegedly behind a gruesome network of murder and match-fixing.
On Monday, Julie “Dondon” Patidongan filed administrative complaints with the National Police Commission (Napolcom), formally accusing several law enforcers of playing a direct role in the abduction and killing of scores of cockfighting bettors, known locally as sabungeros.
The complaints mark a major development in a saga that has haunted both victims’ families and the public since the disappearance of dozens of sabungeros shocked the country in 2021.
Patidongan, who claims to have insider knowledge of the alleged criminal operations, earlier revealed that around 100 individuals were executed by rogue cops moonlighting for an illegal online sabong ring. According to his sworn statement, the victims were targeted for manipulating game outcomes, threatening the profits of the illicit enterprise.
In a chilling parallel update, police confirmed Monday that human remains were recovered from the murky depths of Taal Lake — a discovery that has reignited calls for accountability. The lake, covering over 230 square kilometers, has become the focal point of an extensive search believed to be connected to the missing sabungeros.
Authorities admitted that the bones found in sacks near the shoreline contained a mixture of both human and animal remains, raising suspicions of a possible mass dumping site.
Despite ongoing investigations, critics argue that efforts to uncover the full truth have been slow, possibly due to the involvement of police officers themselves.
Human rights advocates are calling for independent oversight, while families of the victims say they’re still waiting for justice — and for closure.
“This isn’t just about illegal gambling anymore,” said one relative of a missing sabungero. “This is about the police abusing their power and thinking they can bury the truth — literally.”
With formal complaints now on record, the Napolcom is expected to open internal investigations, while the public watches closely. For many, the outcome of this case could define the level of accountability the country’s law enforcement is truly willing to face.
