President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. on Saturday praised Filipino tennis prodigy Alexandra “Alex” Eala for her sensational performance at the 2025 Miami Open, calling it a proud moment for the nation.
“We would like to congratulate our tennis phenomenon, Alex Eala, on her historic and amazing run in the 2025 Miami Open,” President Marcos said in an official statement. “We are one with the entire nation in thanking Alex for her sacrifices and hard work in her quest for glory and honor. I’m sure that the elusive championship title is within reach soon.”
Eala’s impressive run in the prestigious tournament saw her capture the world’s attention and elevate the pride of Filipino sports on the global stage. The President commended her for demonstrating the remarkable skill and resilience of Filipino athletes, saying her feat has inspired many.
“Truly, what you did showed the whole world what a Filipino athlete is all about – determined, steadfast, and never one to back down from challenges,” Marcos told Eala.
Eala made headlines after a stunning upset over world No. 2 and five-time Grand Slam champion Iga Swiatek in the quarterfinals at the Hard Rock Stadium. Her path to the semifinals also included notable victories against unseeded American Katie Volynets, 2017 French Open champion Jelena Ostapenko, and reigning Australian Open champion Madison Keys.
Although Eala’s Miami Open journey ended in the semifinals with a loss to world No. 4 Jessica Pegula, her performance was nothing short of historic.
The Presidential Communications Office (PCO) echoed the President’s sentiments, saying Eala’s tenacity and perseverance embodied the Filipino spirit.
