Already out of the singles tournament, Filipino tennis ace Alexandra ‘Alex’ Eala continues her campaign in the Bad Homburg Open as she teams up with tennis great Venus Williams of the United States in the doubles category to face the Australian-American tandem of Alexandra Osborne and Catherine Harrison.
Their first match is in the Round of 16 schedule no earlier than 10 p.m. (Manila time) today. Eala and Williams, who made a full-time return to tennis at age 45, have shared the court before as opponents at the ASB Classic, where the former world number one teamed with Ukrainian Elina Svitolina and lost against the pair of Eala and Iva Jovic in straight sets, 7-6 (7), 6-1.
The country’s pride had earlier bowed out of the singles event of the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) 500 tournament with a 6-3, 6-3 loss to Belgian standout Elise Mertens on Tuesday. She exited just days after her deep run in the Berlin Open, where she reached the semifinals before falling to Linda Noskova of the Czech Republic.
The 21-year-old lass from Quezon City is in her final tournament before moving on to the Wimbledon, where she is seeded for the first time at 29.
