Filipina tennis sensation Alexandra ‘Alex’ Eala continued her stunning run at the 2026 Berlin Open as she shocked world No. 8 Elina Svitolina of Ukraine, 6-3, 6-4, to advance to the semifinals in the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) 500 grass-court tournament at the Steffi Graf stadion.
Eala’s victory came just a day after the Filipina star pulled off a major upset over Kazakhstan’s world No. 2 Elena Rybakina, marking back-to-back wins against top-ranked opponents in consecutive rounds.
The Filipina ace started strongly against the experienced Ukrainian, quickly building a 4-1 lead in the opening set and maintaining control throughout the match, which lasted 1 hour and 23 minutes.
In the second set, the 21-year-old wildcard entry broke Svitolina three times to take a commanding 5-2 advantage. Svitolina tried a brief comeback by winning two straight games, but the country’s pride simply stayed composed and served out the match.
Eala’s astounding triumph over her higher ranked rival marks one of the biggest breakthroughs in the Filipina’s career as she has now defeated multiple top-10 players, showcasing her growing confidence and maturity on the international stage.
Eala will next face fellow 21-year-old Czech player Linda Nosková in the semifinals.
