Alex Eala stuns world No. 25 Jelena Ostapenko in career-best victory at Miami Open

In what is undeniably the biggest triumph of her young career, Filipino tennis sensation Alex Eala pulled off a monumental upset at the 2025 Miami Open, defeating former French Open champion and current world No. 25 Jelena Ostapenko in straight sets, 7-6(2), 7-5.

The 19-year-old Eala showcased skill, an extraordinary level of composure and resilience, overcoming early adversity in the opening set and a dramatic momentum swing in the second. Her victory propelled her into the third round of a WTA 1000 event for the first time and also marked her first win against a top-25 player and a Grand Slam champion.

Eala’s breakthrough came after nearly two hours of high-intensity tennis that tested her physical and mental grit. The Filipino teen ranked No. 140 in the world, was down 0-4 early in the first set against the hard-hitting Latvian, who won the French Open in 2017 and recently reached the finals of the 2025 WTA Qatar Open, beating three top-10 players.

But Eala, unfazed by her opponent’s resume or roaring start, began to chip away at the deficit. With steely determination, she held serve and followed up with a break at love, sparking a four-game surge that gave her a 5-4 edge. Ostapenko managed to force a tiebreak, but Eala had already found her rhythm — racing to a 4-1 lead in the breaker and ultimately sealing it 7-2.

The second set reversed roles as Eala stormed to a commanding 4-0 lead. But just as she had done earlier, Ostapenko launched a comeback of her own, winning five consecutive games and moving within one game of forcing a third set.

With the pressure mounting, Eala dug deep. She saved a set point in a pivotal 10th game, then broke serve again to take a 6-5 lead. Moments later, she calmly served out the match, completing the upset in one hour and 55 minutes.

“It feels surreal,” Eala shared in a post-match interview. “I’ve looked up to players like Jelena for years. To be able to win a match like this — it’s hard to put into words.”

The win puts Eala in elite company and further cements her reputation as one of the most promising young talents in the sport. Her next challenge? None other than world No. 5 and reigning Australian Open champion Madison Keys, whom she will face in the third round on Sunday, March 23.

As she continues her campaign at the Miami Open, Eala’s dream of breaking through on the world stage quickly becomes a reality — one fearless performance at a time.
