Filipina tennis sensation Alex Eala staged an impressive comeback to defeat Australia’s Talia Gibson, 4-6, 6-2, 6-0, and advance to the quarterfinals of the 2026 Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo, Japan.

After dropping the opening set, Eala regained control of the match with a dominant performance in the second and third sets, completing a three-set victory in their Round of 16 encounter.

Gibson claimed the first set, 6-4, putting the Filipina under early pressure. However, Eala responded by raising her level of play in the second set, breaking through the Australian’s resistance to secure a 6-2 win and force a decider.

The momentum shifted decisively in Eala’s favor in the final set as she overwhelmed Gibson, winning six consecutive games to complete a 6-0 shutout.

Eala’s commanding finish highlighted her ability to recover from a slow start and maintain her composure in a challenging match.

The victory followed her straight-set triumph over British wildcard Mika Stojsavljevic, 6-1, 6-2, in the opening round of the tournament.

With back-to-back victories in Tokyo, Eala moves into the last eight of the women’s singles competition, continuing her campaign at the prestigious WTA tournament.
