Alex Eala secures spot in 2025 French Open main draw, skipping qualifiers for the first time

Filipino tennis player Alex Eala celebrating her entry into the main draw of the 2025 French Open

Filipino tennis sensation Alex Eala has achieved another significant career milestone—clinching a direct entry into the main draw of the 2025 French Open. For the first time since turning professional in 2020, the 19-year-old will not need to battle through the qualifying rounds of a Grand Slam tournament.

Eala’s breakthrough comes on the back of a career-best surge in the WTA rankings, propelled by a standout performance at the 2025 Miami Open. Her impressive run to the semifinals included victories over several seasoned Grand Slam champions, lifting her to World No. 72 and earning her a coveted spot in Roland Garros’ main field.

The French Open organizers have officially listed Eala as the tournament’s 74th seed, according to the seeding release on April 15.

Despite this high point, Eala’s transition to the clay court season has encountered some turbulence. She recently bowed out in the round of 16 at the Oeiras Ladies Open in Portugal, falling to Hungary’s Panna Udvardy in straight sets, 6(4)-7, 4-6.

The French Open, set to begin on May 19 at Porte d’Auteuil in Paris, will feature a highly competitive field. World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka leads the seeds, followed closely by Iga Swiatek—whom Eala stunned in Miami—along with Jessica Pegula, Coco Gauff, and Madison Keys rounding out the top five.

Before heading to Roland Garros, Eala is set to continue her preparations at the WTA 1000 Madrid Open, kicking off April 21. With momentum and confidence on her side, she enters the clay season with her sights firmly set on making waves in Paris.
