Alex Eala carved her name into Philippine tennis history, becoming the first Filipina ever to win a Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) title after a stirring comeback victory at the Guadalajara 125 Open in Mexico.

In her maiden appearance at the Guadalajara tournament, the 20-year-old rising star battled past Hungary’s Panna Udvardy, 1-6, 7-5, 6-3, in a grueling two-and-a-half-hour final at the Pan American Tennis Center in Zapopan on Sunday (Manila time).

The breakthrough did not come easy. Eala endured a nightmare opening set where she was broken four times, but she refused to fold. With grit and composure beyond her years, she clawed her way back in the second frame, saving four break points in a nerve-wracking 12th game before forcing a deciding set.

From there, the Filipina seized control, holding all her service games and capping the match with a backhand winner that sealed her historic triumph.

Eala’s Guadalajara crown is more than just her first WTA 125 title—it is a landmark for Philippine tennis. No Filipina before her had ever lifted a WTA trophy, and she did it in a tournament debut on Mexican soil, proving that Filipino talent belongs on the world stage.

This victory also served as redemption after her runner-up finish at the Eastbourne Open earlier this year, and as sweet revenge against Udvardy, who had beaten her in Portugal just five months ago.

Ranked No. 75 in the world, Eala has been steadily building momentum, recently making history at the US Open as the first Filipino to win a Grand Slam main draw match in the Open era.

Now, with the Guadalajara Open title in her hands, Alex Eala stands not just as a young champion—but as a trailblazer carrying the Philippine flag into uncharted heights in women’s tennis.
