Alex Eala makes emphatic homecoming, dismantles Charaeva in Philippine Women’s Open opener

Alex Eala’s long-awaited return to competitive action on home soil could not have unfolded more convincingly.

Playing in the Philippines for the first time in eight years, the Filipina tennis sensation delivered a commanding performance on Monday night, sweeping aside Russian Alina Charaeva, 6-1, 6-2, in the Round of 32 of the inaugural WTA 125 Philippine Women’s Open at the Rizal Memorial Tennis Center.

Backed by a vocal home crowd and carrying the weight of expectation as the tournament’s No. 2 seed, Eala wasted little time asserting control. She broke Charaeva early in the opening set, dictating play with heavy groundstrokes and sharp movement that left the world No. 163 scrambling from the baseline.

The first set was over in just 27 minutes, a clear statement from the country’s first-ever Top 50 player on the WTA Tour.

Charaeva attempted to reset in the second set, briefly keeping pace as Eala edged ahead, 3-2. But the Filipina quickly raised her level, reeling off a series of clean winners and forcing errors to close out the match in straight sets, sealing a dominant victory that sent the home crowd into celebration.

The win carried added significance beyond the scoreboard. It marked Eala’s first competitive match in the Philippines since 2018, before she left to train at the Rafael Nadal Academy in Spain—a decision that would shape her rise on the global stage. It also served as a form of redemption.

Charaeva had beaten Eala in their lone previous meeting back in 2020, a result that lingered quietly as a footnote heading into this encounter.

True to form, Eala downplayed the moment afterward, sticking to the mindset that has guided her rapid ascent.

Pareho lang ang approach ko—match by match lang, kahit nasa harap ng home crowd. Gagawin ko ang lahat para manalo, she said, emphasizing focus over emotion despite the historic homecoming.

Charaeva, for her part, entered the match with credentials that suggested a tougher battle. The Russian has steadily built her career on the ITF circuit, reaching a career-high singles ranking of No. 171 in 2025 and collecting six singles and five doubles titles. She has also shown flashes of promise on bigger stages, including a notable upset of third seed Océane Dodin at the 2023 WTA 125 Andorrà Open. But against a confident and composed Eala, she struggled to find any sustained momentum.

Eala’s victory sets the tone for what organizers hope will be a landmark tournament for Philippine tennis. The main draw also features fellow Filipinas Tenny Madis, Kaye Ann Emana, and Elizabeth Abarquez, highlighting a growing local presence in international competition.

For now, the spotlight firmly belongs to Eala. Her emphatic opening-round win was more than just a step into the next round—it was a powerful reminder of how far she has come since leaving home as a teenager, and how ready she is to carry Philippine tennis forward on its biggest local stage in years.
