Alex Eala just keeps climbing—and the Filipina tennis sensation has reached another stunning career milestone before even striking her first ball at the Cincinnati Open.
The 21-year-old Eala surged two spots to a new career-high World No. 18 in the WTA live rankings, moving even deeper into the sport’s elite circle with 2,166 points.
The rise comes only weeks after Eala officially broke into the WTA Top 20 for the first time following her breakthrough title run at the Mubadala DC Open. The WTA confirmed that her Washington triumph propelled her to No. 20, making her the first Filipina to crack the women’s Top 20.
Now, she has climbed even higher.
Eala rises without hitting a ball
Eala’s jump in the live rankings came partly from ranking-point movements involving Jasmine Paolini and Ekaterina Alexandrova.
Paolini dropped significant points connected to her previous Cincinnati performance, while Alexandrova also lost points she had been defending from Cincinnati and Monterrey. That opened the door for Eala to move ahead of both players in the live standings.
The live ranking tracker listed Eala at No. 18 with 2,166 points, ahead of Alexandrova and Paolini.
And the most exciting part for Filipino fans?
Eala still has a chance to add more points in Cincinnati.
From historic Top 20 breakthrough to No. 18
Eala’s latest ranking surge is another reward for a remarkable North American hard-court swing.
Her biggest breakthrough came in Washington, where her title run catapulted her into the Top 20 for the first time.
Since then, the Filipina has continued to build momentum on the WTA Tour, carrying growing expectations into another major tournament.
At Cincinnati, Eala is seeded No. 17 and received a first-round bye, sending her directly into the Round of 64. She is set to face Romania’s Elena-Gabriela Ruse, who advanced after beating Magda Linette, 6-0, 6-3.
That means Eala’s Cincinnati campaign could potentially push her ranking even higher if she makes another deep run.

What once seemed like an unbelievable climb has quickly become Eala’s new reality.
