Alexandra “Alex” Eala’s quest for another title ended in the semifinals of the Jingshan Tennis Open last Saturday, where she bowed to eventual champion Lulu Sun, 3-6, 6-4, 6-2.

The 20-year-old Filipina lefty may have missed the final, but she walked away with more than just lessons. The semifinal finish marked her fourth deep run of the season—adding to her campaigns at the Miami Open in March, Eastbourne in June, and the Guadalajara 125 earlier this month.

For her efforts in Jingshan, Eala pocketed $7,960 in prize money. More importantly, she collected 49 WTA ranking points—vital currency for maintaining her place in the sport’s elite circle. To put her feat in perspective, the tournament runner-up earned $13,350, while the champion took home $22,730.

The financial and ranking boost comes as she gears up for her next test: the Suzhou WTA 125 Open, which kicks off Monday in China. With her confidence sharpened by consistent semifinal appearances this season, Eala now aims to turn those near-misses into a championship breakthrough.
