The Afghan Embassy in Japan will cease all activities, including consular services, starting Sunday.
Located in Minato Ward, Tokyo, the embassy has been run by officials appointed by Afghanistan’s former democratic government, which collapsed in 2021 when the Taliban took control.
An embassy representative said the long-term status of the mission has not been decided. The embassy building is expected to remain closed temporarily.
In a statement issued in late December, the embassy said the decision followed consultations with Japanese authorities but did not provide a detailed explanation.
Several Afghan diplomatic posts worldwide have recently faced closures due to funding shortages.
Other missions have seen staff replaced with personnel designated by the Taliban administration.
The suspension in Tokyo marks the latest disruption affecting Afghanistan’s foreign diplomatic presence.
