Adrian Nocum walked off the Smart Araneta Coliseum floor disappointed, but hardly defeated. Rain or Shine’s 98-89 loss to Meralco in the PBA Season 50 Philippine Cup quarterfinals ended the Elasto Painters’ twice-to-beat advantage—and their season—but for Nocum, the night delivered something else entirely: a full-speed lesson from one of the league’s elite guards.
The athletic swingman admitted he was caught off guard by how personal the matchup became once Chris Newsome took the challenge head-on.
“Parang nagulat din ako,” Nocum said moments after the game. “Kami ‘yong nag-i-score, tapos talagang inatake ako ni Newsome. Experience ‘to—dadala ko ‘to next conference, hanggang sa buong career ko.”
It was a rare moment where a breakout scorer was forced to adjust on the fly. Nocum poured in 29 points and tried to will Rain or Shine back into the fight, but Newsome answered with authority, torching the defense for 31 points and controlling the game when it mattered most.
The duel turned into a measuring stick—talent versus experience, momentum versus poise.
For Nocum, the loss stung, but the takeaway was clear. Going toe-to-toe with a veteran who has thrived in big games offered a glimpse of the standard required at the highest level of the league. There were no excuses, only acknowledgment.
Rain or Shine heads into the offseason, while Meralco Bolts move forward to a best-of-seven semifinal showdown against TNT Tropang 5G. As for Nocum, the Mapua product leaves the Philippine Cup with more than just numbers on a stat sheet—he leaves with a reference point.
In defeat, he found clarity. And in facing Newsome, he caught a glimpse of where his game still needs to go.
