Phuket, Thailand – The 3rd ASEAN Battery Technology Conference (ABTC) returned with renewed energy, drawing over 340 participants from more than 20 countries across Asia, Europe, Oceania, and North America. Held at SAii Laguna Phuket from August 27–29, 2025, the event showcased ASEAN’s growing ambition to build a robust regional battery ecosystem and marked the launch of the ASEAN Battery Safety Network (ABSN). The conference was hosted by the Thailand Energy Storage Technology Association (TESTA) in collaboration with five leading battery and EV organizations across ASEAN.
The event was officially opened by Mr. Samawit Supanpai, Deputy Governor of Phuket.
In his opening speech, Mr. Pongpol Yodmuangcharoen, Secretary to the Minister of Industry, emphasized Thailand’s leadership in clean energy, saying, “Thailand and Asia are built on regional strength, turning crisis into opportunities. We are accelerating EV development—not just assembling vehicles, but building batteries from the cell level up, filling critical gaps in our supply chain, and positioning Asia as a clean energy leader. With our first battery cell plant, new circular waste laws, and strengthened regional partnerships, we are transforming trade pressures into bargaining power and waste into value. Thailand is proud to collaborate across ASEAN to champion three principles for future-ready industries: Transparency, Innovation, and Circularity. I am delighted to declare ABTC 2025 officially open, a platform to gather ideas, energize cooperation, and power the future of the Asian green economy.”
Dr. Pimpa Limthongkul, Co-founder and President of TESTA, added, “ABTC 2025 is more than a conference—it’s a platform where ASEAN’s brightest minds, industry leaders, and policymakers come together to shape the future of energy storage. The discussions here will influence how our region manufactures and deploys battery technologies in ways that are both commercially viable and environmentally sustainable. As demand for cleaner energy and electric mobility grows, forums like ABTC are vital to ensure our progress is safe, smart, and forward-looking.”
Highlighting the launch of ABSN, Dr. Sing Yang Chiam, Technical Director of the Singapore Battery Consortium, said, “The ASEAN Battery Safety Network is a milestone for the region. Through this network, we will set common benchmarks, share knowledge in battery science and safety, and harmonize best practices. This will enable faster, safer deployment of battery solutions across ASEAN, while strengthening our collective voice with global partners and standards bodies—benefiting the entire battery value chain.”
Dr. Rezal Khairi Bin Ahmad, CEO of NanoMalaysia Berhad, remarked, “ABTC 2025 reflects ASEAN’s growing confidence not just to adopt, but to develop and lead in advanced battery solutions. We are creating an ecosystem that supports circularity, minimizes waste, and maximizes value across the supply chain. By sharing expertise and aligning policies, we are laying the foundation for an integrated regional market capable of competing globally. I look forward to the next ABTC edition in Malaysia.”
Other highlights included a congratulatory speech by Dr. Sumittra Charojrochkul, Executive Director of the National Energy Technology Center, and an honorary plenary lecture by Nobel Laureate Prof. M. Stanley Whittingham on lithium batteries and the future of localized manufacturing.
The conference also featured thought-provoking panels covering topics such as Unlocking ASEAN’s Battery Potential, The Future of Battery Technologies, AI and Machine Learning in Battery Manufacturing, Sodium-Ion Battery Innovation & Production Milestones, and Technological and Industrial Advances in Battery Systems.
ABTC 2025 not only underscored ASEAN’s growing influence in the global battery industry but also reinforced the region’s commitment to sustainable innovation, safety, and collaboration—energizing the path toward a greener, more resilient future.
