A Pinoy team in the `game of kings’

REP. Mikee Romero leads his own squad to US Open Polo Championship.

MANILA, Philippines — With Rep. Mikee Romero at the helm, the Globalport Polo Team is set to make history as the first Filipino team to compete in the prestigious 2025 US Open Polo Championship in Wellington, Florida, from March 24 to April 20.

“It’s a big honor for me to represent the country in this US Open,” said Romero, a three-term congressman, who will become the first Filipino to play in the event.

“While qualifying for the US Open is an accomplishment in itself, we’re hoping to make an impact and challenge the dominance of the established polo powers.”

Romero, who will carry the Philippine flag, is joined by a strong lineup, including world No. 2 Barto Castagnola of Argentina, known for his incredible skill on the field.

The team also features 17-year-old prodigy Beltran Laughle, a rising star with a 6-goal rating, and Lucas Alberdi, an American-born player renowned for his strategic play and consistency.

This marks the first time the US Open will feature a team representing the Philippines. Romero expressed his commitment to making the nation proud, promising a strong showing in the event.

Though relatively new to polo on the world stage, Romero is no stranger to international competition.

Beyond polo, the congressman is an accomplished sports figure, having competed in various sports such as basketball, cycling, shooting, and volleyball. He also played for La Salle in both the UAAP juniors and seniors basketball divisions.

The US Polo Open, organized by the United States Polo Association (USPA), is widely regarded as the most prestigious polo tournament in the world, with a storied 120-year history.

Leading the Globalport squad is Castagnola, fresh off victories in the Argentine Open and the UK Gold Cup. His inclusion further elevates the team’s chances in this high-profile tournament.
