A legacy of innovating education and transforming futures

The Southeast Asian Ministers of Education Organization – Regional Center for Educational Innovation and Technology (SEAMEO INNOTECH) marked its 55th anniversary, celebrating its transformative contributions to education and innovation across Southeast Asia.

SEAMEO INNOTECH continues to empower educators, inspire learners, and foster regional cooperation. For over five decades, the Center has been at the forefront of educational development, pioneering transformative programs, research and training that have shaped inclusive and impactful learning systems in the region. Its key initiatives include the K-12 curriculum alignment and the development of the Alternative Learning System (ALS) 2.0.

SEAMEO INNOTECH Centre Director Dr. Leonor Magtolis-Briones led the celebration, expressing gratitude to the organization’s partners and stakeholders. Reflecting on its journey, she stated, “With a steadfast commitment to its mission, the Center continues to shape the future of education in Southeast Asia and beyond. As we move forward with artificial intelligence and new advancements in education, we also champion the harmony of science, technology and the humanities to promote human-centered solutions in teaching, learning, and research.”

Under Director Briones’ leadership, SEAMEO INNOTECH has launched several groundbreaking initiatives, including the development of a competency framework for teachers, an international youth-led conference, a national conference series on artificial intelligence, and the establishment of its own art gallery symbolizing the integration of art in education. These efforts have significantly enhanced the organization’s impact, earning a 4.6 satisfaction rating in its annual client survey.

The celebration brought together esteemed dignitaries, partners, and educators to honor the organization’s legacy and envision its future. Dr. Gina Gonong, Undersecretary for Curriculum and Teaching at the Department of Education, delivered the keynote address, underscoring the organization’s pivotal role in fostering innovation. “SEAMEO INNOTECH has trained over 181,000 educators in the last five years alone, equipping them with tools to thrive in an ever-changing world. This milestone reaffirms our commitment to building a brighter, inclusive, and innovative future for education,” she stated.

Following this, Congressman Ron Salo emphasized SEAMEO INNOTECH’s enduring legacy. “This institution’s impact extends beyond classrooms. It has empowered learners, strengthened communities, and inspired collaboration across nations. SEAMEO INNOTECH’s legacy is a testament to what is possible when we act collectively with bold vision,” he said.

Looking ahead, SEAMEO INNOTECH is set to host an international conference on artificial intelligence this year, bringing together educators, experts and policymakers to explore and refine a multi-sectoral framework that ensures inclusive and effective AI integration in education.
