Fifty one demonstrators were arrested for alleged violations at a rally ahead of President Ferdinand ‘Bongbong’ Marcos Jr. (PBBM)’s fifth State of the Nation Address (Sona), according to the Philippine National Police (PNP).
PNP chief Lieutenant General Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. alleged that “they were accosted because of violations of ordinances and special laws, particularly RA 9003, PD 880 and local ordinances.”
Nartatez disclosed that some of the protesters wore masks that hid their faces—a violation which prompted the authorities to mahe apprehensions.
“Vandalism. Ang laki no’ng vinandalize nila. And iyong nagtatakip ng mukha,” he Nartatez pointed out.
Six minors were also arrested by the Quezon City Police District (QCPD) for alleged vandalism during the SoNA-related protest activities in Quezon City. QCPD director Brig. Gen. Randy Glenn Silvio said the six were allegedly wearing ‘balaclavas’ when they were apprehended.
The individuals were arrested for alleged vandalism along Commonwealth Avenue during the protest activities. Their identities were not immediately released.
The arrests took place as various groups staged protest activities along Commonwealth Avenue ahead of and during Marcos’ annual address at the Batasang Pambansa.
The PNP warned groups and individuals against committing violence or other unlawful acts in connection with the President’s annual address.
Authorities have reminded protesters to remain peaceful and comply with the conditions of their permits during the demonstrations.
