A recent Social Weather Stations (SWS) survey reveals that a majority of Filipinos believe former President Rodrigo Duterte should be held accountable for killings linked to his administration’s war on drugs.
Conducted from Feb. 15 to 19 and commissioned by Stratbase Consultancy, the survey found that 51% of respondents favor holding Duterte liable, while 25% disagreed, 14% were undecided, and 10% had no opinion.
Support for accountability was highest in Visayas (62%), followed by Balance Luzon (49%), Mindanao (47%), and Metro Manila (45%). More respondents in rural areas (52%) backed Duterte’s accountability compared to those in urban areas (48%).
The survey, which interviewed 1,800 registered voters through face-to-face interviews, has a ±2.31% margin of error for national results.
Duterte faces an arrest warrant from the International Criminal Court (ICC) for alleged crimes against humanity related to his drug war, covering his tenure as Davao City mayor and Philippine president from Nov. 1, 2011, to March 16, 2019.
He was turned over to the ICC Detention Center in Scheveningen, The Hague, on March 12. The next hearing to confirm the charges against him is scheduled for Sept. 23.
