More than 20 Filipinos with alleged ties to criminal activities have been deported from the United States, Philippine Ambassador to the U.S. Jose Manuel Romualdez confirmed on Sunday.
The ambassador stated that while the deported individuals were involved in criminal activities, the offenses were not considered major. He clarified that about 24 Filipinos had already been sent back to the Philippines.
“Marami na rin, well hindi naman marami, pero ang bilang namin something like 24 na. They have already been deported dahil they were, meron silang, hindi naman very serious crimes, pero they were involved in some criminal activity. They were already deported,” Romualdez said in a Super Radyo dzBB interview.
The deportations are said to be part of a broader effort under U.S. President Donald Trump’s push to remove individuals with criminal backgrounds from the country.
In prior remarks, Romualdez explained that U.S. authorities were focusing on deporting those with criminal records, in addition to the 1.3 million immigrants who had already gone through processing.
