Two high school students from Lyceum of Aparri in Cagayan—Lance Derald Auingan and Raesa Angela Juliana Imperio—brought pride to the Philippines after winning medals at the Southeast Asia Computer Science Olympiad and the Global English Language Olympiad of Southeast Asia held in Incheon, South Korea from April 2 to 5, 2025.
The achievement was proudly shared by Lance’s sister, Bayan Patroller Jamaera Oliva, who accompanied him to the competition. She expressed her joy over the students’ success in raising the Philippine flag on the international stage.
According to event organizer Jose Michael Daje, South Korea was chosen as the host country due to its fast internet speed, which was essential for the Computer Science Olympiad.
Participants from countries like Malaysia, Indonesia, Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand, and Myanmar also joined the competition. Both Lance and Raesa received diamond medals in the Global English Language Olympiad of Southeast Asia – Secondary 1 and 2 category. They impressed judges in areas such as reading comprehension, grammar and usage, essay writing, and more.
Lance also took home a silver medal in the Southeast Asia Computer Science Olympiad – Category 4, which tested their skills in computer literacy and coding.
The Philippines emerged as the overall champion in the Global English Language Olympiad of Southeast Asia, while Malaysia topped the Southeast Asia Computer Science Olympiad.
“Always try your best and stay grounded, regardless of the achievements you may have,” Lance advised fellow students aspiring to join international competitions.
According to Jamaera, they are now preparing to join the International Science and Mathematics Competitions next year.
