At least 19 people were hospitalized after a chlorine drum exploded at a resort in Barangay Pooc, Talisay City, Cebu, on Tuesday night, Mayor Gerald Anthony “Samsam” Gullas confirmed.
According to the Local Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office, the victims inhaled hazardous fumes and suffered from headaches, eye irritation, shortness of breath, and vomiting. Chlorine is commonly used as a disinfectant in water treatment.
“Based on preliminary information, around 19 individuals were brought to the hospital after inhaling hazardous gases caused by the incident,” Gullas said in a statement.
The mayor directed the police and relevant City Hall departments to investigate the incident. He also ordered a cease-and-desist against Alcoseba Resort pending the probe.
“I urge residents who live close to the resort to avoid going there because it’s dangerous,” Gullas advised.
Gullas praised the quick response of the Bureau of Fire Protection Talisay, BFP Region VII Hazmat team, disaster management personnel, barangay responders, Talisay traffic officers, and SWAT team.
