NEW DELHI – At least 15 persons, including 10 women and three children, died and more than 25 were injured when a stampede occurred at the New Delhi railway station late on Saturday night, government officials said.
The incident occurred amid a massive crowd gathered to board a train bound for Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh.
Thousands of devotees were en route to the Triveni Sangam, the sacred confluence of the Ganga, Yamuna, and Saraswati rivers, to take a holy dip during the ongoing Maha Kumbh festival.
Chaos reportedly erupted due to confusion regarding the train’s arrival at one of the platforms, triggering a deadly rush.
Emergency teams swiftly recovered the bodies, while the injured were transported to a local hospital for medical care.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences, mourning the tragic loss of lives. (Xinhua)
