Eleven people, including a two-year-old girl, were saved after their motor banca overturned in waters near Daram, Samar on the evening of December 20, 2025.

The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) Western Samar station received the report at around 6:14 p.m. and immediately mobilized rescue teams.

Two SAR teams from the Coast Guard Clearing Out Post in Catbalogan City boarded rented boats and headed to the area at about 6:20 p.m.

At roughly 7:33 p.m., rescuers found the overturned motor banca between Darahuway Island and Barangay Tinaogan.

All passengers and crew were transferred to the Coast Guard boats and transported to Catbalogan City.

The rescue teams reached the Catbalogan City wharf at 8:20 p.m., where the 11 individuals were handed over safely to their families.

Officials confirmed that everyone rescued was in good health and did not need medical attention.

Preliminary reports indicated that the vessel, captained by 37-year-old Elmar Abasula of Barangay Bayog, Daram, had left Daram around 6 p.m. when rough weather caused it to capsize.

The passengers and crew were residents of Catbalogan City and Daram, including the young child.

Authorities urged all sea travelers and boat operators to monitor weather forecasts and prioritize safety, particularly during adverse conditions.
