
One was reported dead while 30 workers are still missing following a landslide that occurred at a landfill in Barangay Binaliw in Cebu City on Thursday afternoon, January 8, 2026.
According to City Officials, the collapse happened around 5 p.m. while employees were inside the administration office located next to the landfill mound.
Nine individuals were already rescued and were rushed to nearby hospitals but one succumbed while receiving medical treatment.
Rescue efforts were ongoing as of Thursday evening as authorities continued searching for missing workers and assessing the damage. However, Cebu City Councilor Joel Garganera admitted that they are encountering difficulties in the rescue efforts but assured that search and rescue operations will be conducted round-the-clock.
Cebu City Mayor Nestor Archival said in a Facebook post that search and rescue teams, medical assistance and emergency support teams are onsite for the search and rescue operations to save the victims.
The Philippine Red Cross deployed rescue teams and an ambulance to assist in search and medical operations.
