THE PHILIPPINES AND THE U.S. ELECTIONS

THE TWIN killer typhoons “Kristine and Leon” that hit the country one after the other recently, greatly devastated huge areas of the country and brought untold miseries and frustrations to tens of thousands of their victims.

And as if the catastrophic effects of the two super typhoons were not enough, the country was again shaken after a rowdy former President Rody Duterte attended a Senate hearing last week, and made some damning revelations and admissions regarding his regime’s war on drugs.

With those events shaking the country to its core, it is understandable that majority of the Filipinos could not care less about the upcoming United States presidential elections scheduled on November 5 (November 6) in the Philippines.

The country, however, stands at a crossroads.

Whether we like it or not, the outcomes of the U.S. elections will have direct implications on our territorial integrity and national security strategy.

Let’s just hope that the coming administration whoever it is, Kamala Harris or Donald Trump, will support and strengthen our resolve to defend what is ours, especially on the issue of our territorial row with China at the West Philippine Sea.

Aside from the issue of sovereignty, the results of the US elections will also have huge economic implications as far as our country is concerned.

Since the stability in the WPS is crucial towards inviting more local and foreign investors into putting their much needed capital in the country, and pump-up the economy.

A strong U.S. stance could help secure these interests against Chinese encroachments, potentially leading to increased foreign investments.

The results of the recent surveys indicated that the public is increasingly wary of Chinese influence, especially given incidents of harassment of Filipino fishermen and the encroachment by Chinese ships in contested waters.

Hence, a U.S. policy that reflects a commitment to Philippine sovereignty could bolster public support for the government’s actions in the region.

As the U.S. presidential elections approach, the implications for the West Philippine Sea dispute cannot be overstated.

The choices made by American voters will resonate far beyond their borders, impacting regional security, diplomatic relations, and the balance of power in a critical maritime zone.

The Philippines, as a frontline state in this ongoing struggle, must navigate these developments carefully, aligning its strategies with the outcomes of the elections to safeguard its territorial integrity and national interests.

In this complex geopolitical chess game, the stakes are high, and the upcoming elections could very well redefine the future of the West Philippine Sea and its surrounding nations.
